National Survey Ranks America's Top Picks for Famous "Role Model" Moms

RESPECT! CampaignSM Celebrates Role Models with $5 RESPECT! Bracelets, Perfect For Mom

San Francisco (May 4, 2009) – As we head into two special holidays that celebrate moms, dads and the importance of good parenting -- the RESPECT! CampaignSM today announced the results of a new survey revealing America’s picks for the best role model moms. Securing the number one spot for moms is First Lady Michelle Obama, voted as the woman who most deserves to be honored on Mother’s Day for publicly demonstrating the greatest level of respect in her family relationships (47 percent of those surveyed chose her)1. Runners up for the “mom who deserves to be honored and respected this Mother’s Day” were Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry.

The survey kicked off the annual RESPECT! Campaign (GiveRespect.org), an awareness and action campaign created by the Family Violence Prevention Fund with founding national partner, Macy’s. At Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, the campaign uses a positive approach to engage parents on the importance of teaching young people about healthy relationships early and often.

Other women acknowledged by survey respondents as good female role models for choosing healthy and respectful relationships include Kate Winslet, Oprah Winfrey, Queen Latifah and Jennifer Aniston.

“Children learn first how to behave in relationships from watching others, especially their mothers,” says Dr. Elizabeth Miller, an adolescent pediatrician at the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davis and an Advisor to the RESPECT! Campaign.

“Parents are living, breathing role models,” says Esta Soler, Founder and President of the Family Violence Prevention Fund. “Moms have a critical role to play at home and throughout our society – demonstrating kindness, teaching compassion and keeping cool under pressure. Our campaign celebrates all parents who are setting a tone of respect in their families and communities. In doing so, they’re teaching our sons and daughters how to solve problems through conversation, not confrontation, and they are shaping a world free of relationship violence by teaching and modeling healthy relationships.”

The Details: Honoring Moms and Dads by Giving RESPECT!
